The online gambling market in India is huge, with hundreds of players joining online casinos and enjoying the millions of games offered to them using convenient payment methods like UPI. This is a national solution that has been designed with the purpose of catering to Indian users in the best way possible, leaving at their disposal a variety of different banking services and functionalities to use. As such, naturally, the solution not only got offered across most, if not all, Indian online casino sites, but it also became one of the most popular methods used by Indian players. With no further ado, let's go over the details you need to know about it so that you can start using it right away. What is UPI and why decide to use it at an Indian online casino?

About UPI

The National Payment Corporation in India (NPCI), saw the need for a convenient payment method that would offer an all-encompassing suite of services and functionalities to users and created a solution that provided Indian users with multiple options to receive and send money online effortlessly. Although there were plenty of awesome solutions available already, including IMPS, NPCI wanted to introduce a new, innovative solution that would solve many issues the modern Indian user was facing.

The corporation created a system, in collaboration with leading Indian banks, that would allow users, via a single mobile app, to link several of their bank accounts and use multiple banking functionalities and features to get an exceptional online banking experience. In fact, the system was built over the already widely used IMPS infrastructure. IMPS was a popular solution that the corporation launched six years prior, but it needed a few modifications to offer seamless online banking to players. That's when UPI (Unified Payments Interface) emerged.

NPCI made sure to launch a pilot program, in Mumbai, launched by RBI, Governor Dr. Raghuram G Rajan. The launch was on the 1st of April, 2016, so the UPI system was enabled on the apps of 21 member banks, and available on Google Play Store since the 25th of August, of the same year. The pilot was a huge success, obviously, and the solution has been offered by these banks ever since, with thousands of users willingly using it for their everyday purchases and payments.

What happens is, the system gives users the opportunity to link various bank accounts to one single app, which can be downloaded for free and easily on Google Play Store. The result is, that they get access to their money 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and get to send instant money transfers in just a few taps on their mobile device.

The convenience it offered being unrivaled, the solution quickly received immense popularity. Add to that the fact that it aligns with the Regulatory guidelines and it is bulletproof safe, with transaction authentication using the Click 2 Factor Authentication, and there you have it, the most perfect solution to use. As if that wasn't enough, it is also super-easy to get started with, since you only need to register with it, and with that, you'll get your virtual address. This address would be the only thing you’d later need upon transaction request, and you’ll never have to share any debit card or bank account numbers.

Since with it, users were paying utility bills, paying across all kinds of merchants, and purchasing goods from all kinds of eCommerce sites, it should come as no surprise to learn that the solution soon got offered across the online gambling industry. And since so many Indians were already frequenting online casinos, when it arrived across the best Indian casinos, UPI was an instant hit. Today, it is used by most Indian players, especially given the fact that India is facing a possible ban on crypto, and not that many alternative solutions are offered across online casinos that Indian players can use. So, if convinced that it would be a solution you’d like to use and you’re interested in getting started with it, continue reading as you'll find out the exact steps you need to take next.

Getting Started with It

One of the first requirements you need to meet in order to start using the solution is to be an Indian citizen, of course. The second one is to have an active bank account, one or more, for that matter, in order to be eligible to use it. Should you meet these requirements, you can proceed with the next steps.

Now, you can either visit your bank’s official website to find a link or directly download its app on Google Play Store. Once the app is installed, you’d need to fill out a registration form, entering your full name and mobile phone number, and with that, your Virtual ID will be created. This Virtual ID will be your payment address for further use. Create your password next, and go to the Add/Link/Manage Bank Account page to link the bank(s) account number(s) you'd want to be linked to your Virtual ID.

Then, you'll be prompted to change the existing test PIN and create one that would be unique and one that only you will know from then on. Request a change of PIN and you’ll soon receive a notification from your bank containing the OTP on your registered mobile number.

Next, you’ll be instructed to enter your debit card’s last 6 digits and the card’s expiry date. Lastly, you need to enter the OTP the bank sent you and create your unique PIN, to finally press Submit. As long as you’ve followed the instructions we just described step-by-step, you should soon receive a notification informing you whether your changes were declined or approved.

And assuming they have been approved, you’ll be instantly eligible to use your Virtual ID, meaning start using your solution across the many Indian online casinos that offer it. Ready to do that? Read what you need to do in the next segment!

How to Deposit at Online Casinos with UPI?

We already mentioned this but it is worth reiterating the fact that UPI is one of the most popular payment methods used by most, if not all, Indian online casino players. You will find it across a variety of casinos that accept players from India, sites like King Billy, 188Bet Casino and MegaPari, among others. So, the first thing you need to do is find the most perfect site for you to join and register an account with.

Next, you’ll be prompted to make a deposit. To do that with UPI, you need to do the following:

  1. Head over to your chosen casino’s Banking page.
  2. Look for UPI’s logo and select it as your Deposit payment method.
  3. Log into your app and choose the Send Money/Payment
  4. If not pre-entered, enter the casino's Virtual ID after you require it from Customer Support.
  5. Wait for the SMS confirmation and press the Confirm button.
  6. As soon as you enter your PIN, the money will instantly arrive in your casino balance.

How to Withdraw Winnings with It?

Assuming you’ve successfully deposited and now you wish to cash out your winnings, you’d be glad to know that UPI is an option for withdrawals, too.

You just need to log into your app, and this time, select the option Collect Money/Request for Payment. Enter the required Virtual ID and the amount you wish to cash out. Confirm the request and the casino will soon be notified of it. Assuming you are eligible to cash out as much as you requested, the operator will accept the request and authorize the transaction using its PIN. An SMS confirmation will arrive to both you and the operator, from your respective banks, informing you of the success of the transaction.

Fees and Limits

Given the fact it was launched in collaboration with leading Indian banks and NCPI is behind it, it should come as no shock to learn that UPI is one of the most cost-efficient methods available to Indian users.

That's why it does not charge fees itself, but the banks involved do. The fees depend on the service you're using, but are rather small and affordable, covering the basic transfer costs. So, to find out what the fees are for the service you wish to use, get in touch with a representative at your respective bank.

Allowed Countries

Naturally, given the fact that the solution was launched in Mumbai and intended for Indian users, it is only available in India.

You need to be Indian and have an active account with one or more of the partnered Indian banks in order to use it. Therefore, if not such a player, you'd need to look for an alternative solution available in your country that offers similar services.

Accepted Currencies

The default currency you’ll be using when transacting via UPI is the Indian rupee, of course. This is India’s official native currency, and the solution works through banks so it is only natural for it to be offered.

However, if your bank allows it, you may use foreign currencies, at the cost of a conversion fee. You'd need to consult with your bank, though, to discover whether this would be an option. Nevertheless, the wisest thing to do is to use Indian rupees anyway since it is always an option across the numerous Indian casinos that accept the solution, and that way, you'll avoid currency conversion fees.
