Stud Choice Poker
Introduction
Stud Choice Poker is a video poker variant I first noticed at the Rampart casino in Las Vegas in February 2015. It is an easy video poker game that entails only six possible choices, as opposed to the 25=32 in conventional video poker.
The thrust of the game is the player is given two two-card starting hands to choose from. After choosing one, the player then decides whether to play 5-, 6-, or 7-card stud. The game will then give the player more cards to complete the hand.
The game is played in multi-play mode, with 3 to 15 hands possible, in increments of 3. The player may bet one to five coins per hand. As usual, there is an incentive on the royal flush win to play five coins per hand.
Rules
- The game is played with a single 52-card deck.
- The player may bet 3, 6, 9, 12, or 15 hands.
- The player may bet 1 to 5 coins per hand.
- The game shall deal two two-card starting hands.
- The player may choose either starting hand.
- The player may then choose to play five-card, six-card, or seven-card stud.
- The game shall clone the remaining 50 cards, including the two from the hand not chosen, into as many decks as the number of hands the player bet. The game shall then deal random cards to complete each hand according to whether the player choose five-card, six-card, or seven-card stud.
- Each hand shall be scored and paid according to the pay table for the number of cards in each hand.
Example
First, I made a bet of 5 coins and 15 lines at 5¢ each, for a total bet of 75 coins at 5¢ each or $3.75.
In the above picture, I had to choose to start with 9-2 off-suit or a pair of eights. I chose the eights.
I then chose to play six-card stud. Over the 15 hands I bet, my results were as follows:
- 2 two pairs at 10 coins each, for a return of 20 coins.
- 2 three of a kinds at 20 coins each, for a return of 40 coins.
- 2 full houses at 60 coins each, for a return of 120 coins.
My return was 180 coins, which at 5¢ a coin was $9.

Jacks or Better
The following strategy will be appropriate for the Jacks or Better game with the following pay tables. The wins are expressed as per coin, based on five coins bet per hand.
