Suit Yourself

Introduction

Suit Yourself is a video poker game by U1. The gist of the game is the player picks a suit and if he gets a flush in that suit, then he plays a bonus round where aces are wild with no pay table change. This feature is mostly paid for with a tight pay table, where the lowest paying hand is a pair of aces.

Rules

Standard video poker rules are followed, which I assume the reader is familiar with, except as noted below.

  1. The player must choose a suit, which is referred to as "Your Suit." This suit will remain as "Your Suit" until it is changed.
  2. If the player gets a flush on the draw in "Your Suit," then he shall play the bonus game. I believe that straight flushes and royal flushes also count as a "flush," for bonus purposes, but am not sure. The rules say "any flush" will trigger the bonus.
  3. The first stage of the bonus round consists of a field of 12 cards, consisting of all the face cards.
  4. The player shall choose one card at a time, without replacement, until he picks all three faces cards of his chosen suit. The number of free games shall depend on the number of picks this entails, as shown in the following table.

  5. In free games aces are wild. The pay table remains the same.
  6. Free games may re-trigger more free games, I assume infinitely.
  7. Free games are at the same bet as the initiating bet.
  8. Every day of the week there are two specified ranks for that day. These are known as the "Cards of the Day." If the player gets a four of a kind in either rank, I assume on the draw, then he shall get a "Bonus Spin." The following table shows the ranks for each day.

  9. The Bonus Spin wheel has the following slices on the wheel: 50, 7, 25, 10, 30, 8, 12, 9, 100, 7, 20, 10, 35, 7, 15, 9. These wins are all relative to the amount bet on the initiating bet. I do not know if this wheel is weighted.
  10. There is also a Mystery Bonus Spin feature, which may occur at anytime. I assume it is triggered randomly outside the scope of the base game.
  11. The Mystery Bonus Spin wheel, for bets of $4 or more, has the following slices: 500, 25, 50, 40, 200, 25, 40, 1195, 50, 40, 300, 25, 100, 40. Wins are relative to the amount bet on the initiating spin. I do not know if this wheel is weighted.
  12. The Mystery Bonus Spin wheel, for bets of less than $4, has the following slices: 100, 5, 10, 8, 50, 5, 10, 8, 250, 3, 10, 8, 75, 5, 20, 8. Wins are relative to the amount bet on the initiating spin. I do not know if this wheel is weighted.
  13. Based on the machine at the Rampart casino, the player may bet $0.05 to $25. There are no "coins," the bet the player chooses is the total amount bet per hand.

Return Table

The return depends on the bet amount and whether the player invokes the "you hold" or "auto hold" feature. For bets of $10 and less, the return goes up as the bet goes up. It does this by micro changes in the pay table. The following table shows the return for both modes by bet made.

The above returns were kindly provided in the help screens. They were taken from a machine at the Rampart casino in Las Vegas. I am told by U1 that the returns are the same for any given bet level for all their machines. However, they do add that there are low-volatility and high-volatility settings the casino may choose from, achieved through pay table configurations. They say most casinos choose low-volatility.

As just an example of a pay table, the following is the pay table for You Hold mode for a $0.25 bet at the Rampart.

Rampart Pay Table — $0.25 bet — You Hold

Event Win in Dollars Win in Credits
Royal flush $200.00 800
Straight flush $25.00 100
Four of a kind $8.00 32
Full house $2.00 8
Flush $1.25 5
Straight $1.00 4
Three of a kind $0.50 2
Two pair $0.25 1
Aces $0.25 1

Strategy

For 99.54% of players out there, I would recommend playing on Auto Hold mode. I played the game for about 15 minutes in that mode and the cards held were very non-intuitive. There is a big incentive to go for flushes in "Your Suit." The other 0.46% of players should be those who have carefully studied a proper strategy for the name. As far as I know, the number of such strategies out there for Suit Yourself is zero. Don't hold your breath waiting for me to create one either.

Analysis

U1 kindly discloses the return of the game and the strategy must be so unusual that I will decline to analyze the game myself, at least for now. However, I was curious about the free game bonus. The following table shows the probability of each number of picks and free games. The bottom row shows the player can expect to pick 9.75 cards and win 7.522727 free games.
