The history of Super Bowls begins with the NFL – AFL merger in the 1966. The winner of the NFL would play the winner of the AFL in a championship game which was labeled the Super Bowl by Lamar Hunt. Lamar Hunt was the principal founder of the American Football League (AFL) as well as the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Super Bowl is the largest American sporting event which consistently attracts hundreds of millions of viewers across the world. Below if the list and details of all the Super Bowls from the first one to the fifty fourth one which will be played on Sunday, February 2nd, 2020.

Super Bowl I (First World Championship Game - AFL vs NFL)

Score: Green Bay Packers 35 – Kansas City Chiefs 10

Date: January 15, 1967

Stadium: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California

Details: The first half of this game was competitive as the Kansas City Chiefs outgained the Packers 181 to 164 and the score at halftime was 14 to 10 in favor of the Green Bay Packers. The second half of the game was dominated by Green Bay as they shut out the Chiefs in the third and fourth quarter. The Packers scored another 21 points and won the first Super Bowl ever 35 to 10.

Details: As expected the Green Bay Packers led by the legendary coach Vince Lombardi dominated this Super Bowl. The Oakland Raiders were only able to score two touchdowns. The Packers kicked four field goals, a pick six, and 3 touchdowns.

Super Bowl III

Score: New York Jets 16 – Baltimore Colts 7

Details: With the Baltimore Colts heavily favored, but Joe Namath guaranteed victory and he came through on the promise. The Jets built up a 16 to 0 lead by the start of the fourth quarter. Superstar quarterback Johnny Unitas was able to score a touchdown with only a few minutes left in the game. This was one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.

Super Bowl IV

Score: Minnesota Vikings 7 – Kansas City Chiefs 23

Details: This game was dominated by the Kansas City Chiefs defense. They limited the Vikings to 67 rushing yards, they forced three interceptions, and they recovered two fumbles as well. Super Bowl MVP, Len Dawson, was 12 for 17 on his passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs won this contest easily with a final score of 23 to 7.

The Baltimore Colts squeaked out the win by outscoring the Dallas Cowboys 10 to 0 in the fourth quarter.

Details: The Dallas Cowboys dominated this football game by smothering the Dolphins with inseparable defense holding Miami to only one field goal offensively. Although the game was close in the first half the Dallas Cowboys really turned it on in the second half. A major break in the ball game happened when Chuck Howley intercepted a pass and returned the ball deep in Miami’s territory setting up an easy score.

Details: The Oakland Raiders made Super Bowl history by gaining a record 429 yards in this game as well as a record 288 yards in just the first half of the contest. The uneventful first quarter ended with a scoreless effort by both sides, but the Oakland Raiders scored on three consecutive possessions in order to take a lead of 16 to 0 by halftime. The Raiders two interceptions in the fourth quarter one of which was returned for a touchdown helped guide the Raiders to the NFL championship title.

Details: The Rams were up 13 to 10 at halftime. Bradshaw connected with Lynn Swann on a long 47 yard touchdown pass which was a big play in giving the Steelers momentum. The game went the other way shortly after as the Rams scored on a halfback option play putting Los Angeles back in front. The Steelers finished strong by scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win this Super Bowl 31 to 19.

Super Bowl XV

Score: Oakland Raiders 27 – Philadelphia Eagles 10

Details: Jim Plunket throws 2 touchdown passes putting the Raiders up 14 to 0 early. Rod Martin intercepted the Eagles Ron Jaworski three times which was a Super Bowl record. Eagles didn’t score enough to stay in this game as Philly loses 27 to 10.

Details: The Cincinnati Bengals put up a big fight as they accumulated 356 yards of offense while the San Francisco 49ers only put up 275 yards of total offense. This is the first time a team has won the Super Bowl after being outgained in yardage. Joe Montana came up huge when he needed to as he threw for a touchdown as well as running one in himself. Niners win in a close game 26 to 21.

Super Bowl XVII

Score: Miami Dolphins 17 – Washington Redskins 27

Details: Raiders outgained the Redskins in yards 385 to 283. Marcus Allen was a serious threat in this game as he gained a then record of 191 yards as well as 2 touchdowns. Washington was not able to find the end zone as they only scored on 3 field goals. Raiders blew out the Redskins 38 to 9.

Super Bowl XIX

Score: Miami Dolphins 16 – San Francisco 49ers 38

Details: Dan Marino and Joe Montana both passed for over 300 yards, but the 49ers really out scored the Dolphins. Miami led 10 to 7 in the first quarter, but then the Niners scored 3 touchdowns in the second quarter along with 10 unanswered points in the second half of the game. 49ers won 38 to 16.

Super Bowl XX

Score: Chicago Bears 46 – New England Patriots 10

Details: The Chicago Bears absolutely dominated the Patriots in every aspects of this game. The Bears defense set records for sacks with 7, fewest rushing yards allowed with 7, as well as margin of victory at 36 points. The Patriots were eventually held to negative yardage throughout the first half. New England finished the game with only 123 yards from scrimmage which was the second lowest total yards in Super Bowl history. Bears won in a dominating fashion with a final score of 46 to 10.

Doug Williams played out of his mind amazing as he set multiple Super Bowl records. Williams was the MVP as he finished the game with 340 yards as well as 4 touchdowns. Doug was the first player in Super Bowl history to throw for 4 touchdowns in a single quarter. Skins won big 42 to 10 over the Broncos.

Super Bowl XXIII

Details: This game was defined by the 49ers fourth quarter game winning drive that was absolutely amazing. With San Francisco losing by 3 points they started with the ball on their own 8 yard line and 3 minutes and 10 seconds remained on the game clock. The 49ers drove down the field methodically, and then they capped the drive off when Joe Montana threw a clutch touchdown pass to John Taylor with only 34 seconds left in the game. Jerry Rice had a huge day with 215 yards as well as a touchdown. Rice won the Super Bowl MVP honor.

Details: The combined score of 75 points and the ten combined touchdowns both remain Super Bowl records. Steve Young led his team by throwing the ball all over his opponents as he racked up 325 yards by completing 24 out of 36 passes. The Super Bowl MVP, Steve Young, tossed a record 6 touchdown passes which was another Super Bowl record. This game was dominated by the 49ers as they went on to win easily as the final score was 49 to 26.

Details: Larry Brown became the first ever Super Bowl MVP at that position of cornerback. He came up with 2 big time interceptions in the second half of this game. Brett Favre threw an at the time Super Bowl record 81 yard touchdown pass to his wide receiver, Antonio Freeman. Desmond Howard returned a New England kick off for a then Super Bowl record 99 yards. Howard gained 154 yards on his kick off returns making him the MVP of this game.

MVP: Terrell Davis – Running Back for the Denver Broncos

Details: This was an extremely close game. John Elway was amazing toward the end of the game as he lunged into end zone as he got hit and did a helicopter spin landing him across the goal for a touchdown. Terrell Davis scored the go ahead touchdown with only 1 minute and 45 seconds left. His three rushing touchdowns over the course of this game was a Super Bowl record and earned him the MVP of Super Bowl XXXII.

Details: John Elway hit his receiver Rod Smith for an 80 yard touchdown pass at one point in the game. Elway had a great game as he won the MVP of this NFL championship game. At that time John Elway was the oldest player to be named the MVP of the Super Bowl. Tom Brady surpassed that in 2017.

Super Bowl XXXIV

Score: St. Louis Rams 23 – Tennessee Titans 16

MVP: Kurt Warner – Quarterback for the St. Louis Rams

Details: This game was a defensive battle early on. By halftime the Rams had the 9 to 0 lead on three successful field goals. Then in the third quarter the Rams scored a touchdown to pull ahead 16 to 0, but then the Titans poured on 16 points of their own consecutively which tied this contest at 16 points each. Kurt Warner (Super Bowl MVP) connected with Isaac Bruce on a 73 yard touchdown pass. Tennessee drove the field at the end of the game trying to tie it up. Kevin Dyson was tackled one yard short of the goal line on the final play of the game. This was one of the best Super Bowls over the last couple decades.

Details: The Packers dominated the first half of this match up.
