Los Angeles Dodgers’ Edwin Rios Lost for Season Due to Shoulder Surgery
Introduction
On Wednesday, May 12th, 2021 the defensing MLB World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers have announced that their back-up third baseman, back-up first baseman, pinch hitter, and young utility player in Edwin Rios will have to miss the remainder of the 2021 Major League Baseball season due to a surgical procedure of his right shoulder. Rios suffered a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder recently, and Edwin will be just another piece of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ major league roster lost to injury.
Rios is currently scheduled to have his right shoulder operated on next week, and he will hopefully fully recover for the beginning of the 2022 MLB season. Rios got off to a rough start to his 2021 MLB season with the Los Angeles Dodgers as he is batting .078 with only one home run over the course of the 25 games that he has appeared in so far this year. He is clearly struggling to make solid contact with barrel of bat on the baseball along with the majority of big leaguers.
The 27-year-old Puerto Rican former top MLB prospect of the Los Angeles Dodgers made his major league debut during the 2019 MLB season. Rios appeared in a total of 7 playoff games last year in addition to hitting 2 incredibly huge home runs for the LA Dodgers throughout the National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves last fall. His bat and glove will unfortunately be sorely missed off the bench for the Los Angeles Dodgers for the rest of the 2021 MLB season.
Other Los Angeles Dodgers out with Injuries Right Now
Dustin May is a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ starting pitching rotation that was lost for the season in order to correct his pitching arm. May had Tommy John surgery on his right arm on Wednesday, May 12th, 2021 which will keep him out of game action until at least the summer of the 2022 Major League Baseball season.
The Dodgers have been without the 2019 National League MVP outfielder in Cody Bellinger due to a hairline fracture in his leg since the first series of the 2021 Major League Baseball season. There is no timetable for Bellinger’s return to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ starting line – up as of now, but I am sure the LA Dodgers can not wait to see him starting again for their demolished roster early on this season.
Starting pitchers for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tony Gonsolin as well as David Price, are both still slowly returning intentionally from injuries to sustain what was probably the deepest rotation in Major League Baseball prior to the start of the 2021 MLB season. The Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff is already short-handed at the moment, and they will have to rely on a bullpen game or a spot start which will most likely be necessary on Monday, May 17th, 2021 when they face the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The promising young rookie utility player, Zach McKinstry, is still out with strained right oblique currently, while the Los Angeles Dodgers core right-handed relief pitcher, Corey Knebel, is likely out for a matter of several months with a strained back muscle. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ bullpen is also without the services of Brusdar Graterol who is nursing a forearm injury as well as Scott Alexander who is sidelined short-term with another shoulder injury.
The Los Angeles Dodgers were also forced to shut down their top pitching prospect in Josiah Gray in order to him recovering from a right shoulder impingement. Gray was scratched from his minor league start at the last minute on night of Tuesday, May 11th, 2021 in order to rest for at least a week’s time before he is reevaluated once again by the medical staff of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
