Introduction

The Spread and Threat of Coronavirus Temporarily Shut Down Sporting Events Worldwide

As the threat and spread of the strain of the coronavirus, Covid-19, makes its way across the world leaving a path of illness, death, and destruction; sporting events have been greatly affected as well. Many, if not the vast majority of all regulated amateur, collegiate, and professional leagues have either postponed or cancelled upcoming events. The few rare ones that are going to take place are planning on playing in front of empty venues with no fans admitted.

This issue of fear and heavy caution hopefully will subside soon, but in the meantime huge sporting events such as the 2020 March Madness Tournament have been cancelled which has drastic consequences for local, regional, national, and the overall world economy. Millions to billions of dollars, euros, and other forms of currency are at stake. I can only hope things will turn around soon before too much damage is done at this trying time in history.

As of Saturday, March 14th, 2020, below is a detailed list of sporting events that have been affected by the coronavirus (according to ESPN).
