- In Super Bowl XIV at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 31 to 19.

- The first slalom ski race run ever takes place in Mürren, Switzerland.

- George Foreman TKO’s Joe Frazier in the second round to gain the heavyweight boxing title.
