- All Chicago World Series: the Chicago White Sox win four games to two against the Chicago Cubs in the 3rd MLB World Series.

- Wayne Gretzky surpasses Gordie Howe as the National Hockey League's all time top scorer.

- Milwaukee Bucks play their first game ever as they lost to the Chicago Bulls with a final score of 89 – 84.

- First ever professional golf tournament was held. Willie Park won the tournament that was played in Scotland.
