- The American League votes unanimously to adopt the designated hitter rule for a three year trial period.

- First yacht race across the Atlantic Ocean.

- Major League Baseball changes rule that if ball bounces over the fence it is no longer a home run but a ground rule double.

- Cornerback Charles Woodson wins the 63rd Heisman Trophy Award while playing for the Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA.

- The famous sports announcer Howard Cosell retires from Monday Night Football.
