He threw for 3,701 passing yards as well as 22 touchdown passes, and only 6 interceptions while he rushed for 760 yards and 13 touchdown scores too. One of Hurts’ best overall performances last season came during the biggest game of the year in Super Bowl LVII. In Super Bowl LVII Jalen compiled a total of 374 yards as well as 4 touchdowns, but he did account for 1 very costly turnover in a 38 to 35 hurtful loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Progression of Hurts from College Football to the NFL
Hurts’ ascension to where he is now as one of the top elite quarterbacks in the National Football League was not easy or even a straight line of progression like many of the other top NFL QB’s. Hurts was the 1st - freshman quarterback to start for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and their legendary head coach, Nick Saban. Although, he was eventually benched during the College Football National Championship game in favor of Alabama deciding to play Tua Tagovailoa during the next season which ultimately led to Jalen losing his starting quarterback job at Alabama.
Hurts made the wise decision to transfer to the University of Oklahoma Sooners for his senior year of college ball, and Hurts had a big-time standout campaign at Oklahoma where he finished that year in 2nd place to Joe Burrow in Heisman Trophy Award voting. Hurts was a 2nd round selection of the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2020 NFL Draft. He managed to take over as the starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles for a struggling Carson Wentz toward the end of Jalen’s rookie NFL season. He became the full-time starting QB in 2021 once Wentz was ultimately traded to the Indianapolis Colts.
Hurts has put together an overall record of 23 and 11 as a starter for the Philadelphia Eagles, including a 14 and 1 record last season because Jalen had to miss 2 games with a right shoulder strain towards the end of the 2022-2023 NFL regular season.
