Online Casinos for players from New Jersey in 2024

Introduction

Always at the forefront of the fight for legal gambling, New Jersey legalized online betting activities back in 2013. At that time, in the entire U.S., the Garden State had only two rivals in its quest for iGaming revenue: Nevada, which legalized online poker somewhat earlier, and Delaware, which was just about to start paying cash winnings for internet casino games.

The rivalry, however, was serious only on paper because of the relatively small size of Delaware’s market and the limitations of Nevada’s online gambling legislation. With this in mind, New Jersey was simply destined to be a success from day one. Having gone through different challenges, NJ has definitely fulfilled the expectations and become a leader, living up to its beautiful motto “Liberty and Prosperity”.

Today, the state can brag of a thriving iGaming market geared towards further growth and development.

Brief History of Gambling in New Jersey

Long before New Jersey became an early adopter of online gaming, the state was widely renowned for the iconic Boardwalk and fashionable casinos of Atlantic City, which is rightly called the gambling capital of the East Coast. Second only to fabulous Las Vegas, it is home to more than thirty brick-and-mortar venues that attract millions of visitors year after year.

While the construction on the Boardwalk started in 1870, the story of legal gambling in NJ is not that old, going back to 1939 when pari-mutuel horse race betting became a regulated activity. Traditional casino entertainment, however, had to wait pretty long for its turn to be legalized at a state level, which finally happened in June 1977 when Governor Brendan Byrne signed the New Jersey Casino Control Act into law.

In fact, the aforementioned law could easily become a reality a couple of years earlier, if it wasn’t for the “wrongly” formulated referendum question in 1974. At the time, voters were offered to amend the State Constitution to allow casinos state-wide. Quite understandable, 60% of them said “No” because they did not want to find themselves in a situation similar to Nevada where the industry was heavily infiltrated by organized crime.

But in 1976, NJ held another referendum, restating the question to allow gambling only in Atlantic City and not in other municipalities. The second attempt was successful and supported by 56% of voters. The next year, the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) was established to issue licenses to operators and regulate their activities.

Since the early 1990s, the Garden State has implemented a range of measures to make its gambling legislation and practice more business-friendly, trying to attract as many operators ready to invest in the local economy as possible. As for the online industry, the history was made in November 2013 when New Jersey became one of the first U.S. states to legalize online casinos and let land-based operators provide gaming services via internet platforms and mobile devices.

Online Gambling Laws and Regulations

All gaming and betting activities within the state are regulated by the New Jersey Casino Control Act from 1977. Over the years, it has been modified through several amendments to keep abreast with the rapidly changing environment of the industry, which is arguably, one of the most dynamic out there. The Act is complemented by rules and regulations provided by the Casino Control Commission (CCC), which is in charge of the licensing process.

The Commission has three members who are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate. Under normal circumstances, members serve five-year terms, but, the most interesting thing is, the panel should almost be balanced in a political sense. Namely, in accordance with the rules, no more than two commissioners can be from the same party. The CCC makes its decisions on whether to grant or deny licenses to certain applicants based on the reports provided by the Division of Gaming Enforcement.

Two important authorities that oversee compliance with all laws and regulations are the Regulatory Enforcement and Regulatory Prosecutions Bureaus. Their activities cover a broad spectrum of topics, from proper advertising and underage gambling to game rules and fair play.

To access online casinos licensed in New Jersey, players need to be at least 21 years old and physically present within the state borders. Despite what many think, a person does not have to be a NJ resident and live there but should be located in the state when placing bets. Today, every web-based platform leverages geolocation software to know where their customers come from, using this information to grant or deny access to their services in accordance with their licenses.

Gaming Options for New Jersey Casino Players

With such big-name brands as BetMGM, Caesar’s, or Borgata, to cite just a few, the New Jersey online casino scene has a lot to offer to every style of player. From all types of slots to immersive live game shows – the lobbies are chock-full of exciting releases from the world’s leading software providers. Well, many local punters still think that offshore casinos have bigger libraries, however, it looks like the main reason for going offshore is not the number of games but the value of bonuses.

Returning to the topic of content suppliers, legendary Evolution has chosen the Garden State to build its two state-of-the-art live studios, the first was launched in August 2018 and the second in November 2022. Known for its incredible portfolio of live roulette, blackjack, baccarat, poker, dice, and lottery-style games, the company constantly adds new titles, introducing unique mechanics and merging different genres like in Dead or Alive Saloon, for instance.

Other top-tier software developers with a strong presence in NJ are Wazdan, Relax Gaming, Playtech, Red Rake, High 5 Games, and many more. Some of them entered the market through strategic partnerships with local operators, some applied for a license. Anyway, the great thing is that players in New Jersey can also freely enjoy all the benefits of offshore gambling with its immense gaming libraries and a wide variety of lucrative bonuses.
